Question 1

Which sealant is right for my project?

Accepted Answer

It depends on where you're sealing. For bathrooms and kitchens, use G1 Kitchen & Bath where its listed substrates and limitations fit. For windows and doors, G2 Window & Door provides UV and weather resistance. For compatible glass bonding and aquarium construction when fully cured, review the D1 Glass Bonding TDS. For general non-structural sealing, review D2 All-Purpose. Need paintable caulk for trim? Consider B1 or B2 acrylic latex. Always confirm the application in the applicable TDS.

Question 2

What colors are available?

Accepted Answer

Colors vary by product. G1 is Crystal Clear, Porcelain White and Black. G2 is Clear, Porcelain White, Gray, Black, Anodized Clear and Dark Bronze. G3 is Black, White, Gray, Anodized Clear and Dark Bronze. D1 is Crystal Clear only and D2 is Clear and Porcelain White. B1 and B2 are White, Black and Gray. A1 and A2 are White, Yellow and Gray. E1 foam is Yellow and Orange. Custom color matching is offered on the G2, G3 and E1. For OEM orders we can match most colors. Check the product page for exact availability.

Question 3

Are your products paintable?

Accepted Answer

No silicone accepts paint, so the G1, G2, G3, D1 and D2 are not paintable. If the joint has to be painted, use the B1 Fast-Dry or B2 Everyday Use acrylic latex caulks, or the A1 and A2 hybrid polymers, which their data sheets list as paintable after full cure.

Question 4

What is the shelf life of your sealants?

Accepted Answer

The G1, G2, D1, D2, B1 and B2 carry an 18-month shelf life from the date of manufacture. The G3, A1, A2 and E1 carry 12 months. Storage temperatures differ by product: the G-series, D-series and B-series store below 80F (27C), the A1 and A2 between 41F and 80F (5C to 27C), and the E1 foam between 60F and 80F (16C to 27C). Never expose E1 cans above 120F (49C). Keep all of them in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, and keep the B-series from freezing. Always check the date printed on the cartridge.

Question 5

What is the cure time for silicone sealant?

Accepted Answer

On the G1, G2, D1 and D2 the surface skins in 5 to 10 minutes, is tack free in about 30 minutes, and a standard bead cures through in 24 to 48 hours. The G3 exterior facade silicone is slower: tack free in about 1.7 hours and 7 to 14 days for a full section. Thicker beads and cold or dry conditions take longer. Do not expose the joint to water or heavy use before full cure.

Question 6

Can I apply new sealant over old sealant?

Accepted Answer

No. New sealant does not bond to old sealant. You need to remove all existing material first, clean the surfaces with isopropyl alcohol, let them dry completely, then apply fresh sealant. Check our How-To guides for step-by-step removal instructions.

Question 7

What surfaces does neutral cure silicone work on?

Accepted Answer

Neutral cure silicones do not release acetic acid, so they are the safe silicone on metal and masonry. Each sheet lists its own substrates rather than building on the one before it. G1 is listed for glass, ceramic tile, porcelain, glazed surfaces, aluminum and stainless steel. G2 is listed for glass, aluminum, vinyl, PVC, brick, masonry and stone. G3 is listed for concrete, masonry, brick, stone, metal, aluminum, glass and ceramic. Silicone does not accept paint. Always clean and dry the surface first, and prime porous substrates.

Question 8

Where can I find Technical Data Sheets (TDS)?

Accepted Answer

TDS and SDS documents are available on each product's detail page. You can also download our full product catalog PDF, or build a submittal package with the TDS, SDS and test reports for the products on your project.
